Attention all Nurses or anyone who uses
growth charts:
Interactive web site to calculate growth
Go to http://medcalc.com/growth/
The site is self-explanatory but here are a few tips. If you chose
"premie", it will calculate the gestational age if you put in the
gestational age at birth.
Once you’ve entered all the information
it will calculate the percentiles and comparisons when you click
on the growth parameter that you want at the bottom. Be sure you
have chosen either inches or centimeters. DO NOT USE THE BMI calculations.
They are incorrect. With this information, you can determine when
you need to refer for slow weight gain. If there has been an unusual
change in percentile over time or if the percentiles are unusually
high or low, you will want to refer to the Medical Home or primary
care health provider so they can make recommendations and stay aware
of the concerns of the child. Have Fun :)
Children with autism,
fathers benefit from greater interaction:
Early Childhood Report Vol 6, Issue 5 May 2005
This article reports on the work of
researchers from the University of Florida in their work on father-child
relationships. Through training fathers to take a more active role
with their autistic children researchers found improved communication,
and less frustration on the part of the father. Another interesting
factor was that mothers who were taught techniques to benefit their
children did not pass the information on to other family members.
It was found that fathers “took the lead in training the mothers and
siblings in the rest of the family” The University of Florida is developing
a web site so that training booster sessions can be provided online
to participating fathers.
